In this blog post you will find 10 Reasons Why Cleaning Lifts Your Mood. It’s hard to believe that such a simple act can have such a strong impact on our moods, but trust me, it does. Let’s get on with the list!
1. Cleaning Lifts Your Mood Because It Gets Rid of Clutter
If you’ve ever walked into a home full of clutter, you know what I’m talking about. It’s that feeling of utter defeat. You look around, and you just shake your head and mumble something about getting to it tomorrow.
But, tomorrow comes, and you still do nothing about it. I know, because I do the same thing!
But when things are clutter free and where they are supposed to go, it is amazing. Stress somehow just melts away, and the clutter isn’t competing anymore for your attention. It’s magical.
Think about it: When you look at clutter you can almost feel your anxiety overcoming you. But when you look at a clean empty table with a simple vase and a flower sticking out – you get a sense of zen. Amiright?
2. Cleaning Lifts Your Mood Because It’s A Proactive Task To Get Rid of Negativity
Let’s talk about this. Negative spaces are awful. You go in and you know you’re hit with anxiety, and you can’t rest. God help you if you try to relax. But, while you clean, you suddenly get the upper hand of who or what controls who.
You suddenly have power to get rid of the negative aspects in your life. You see clutter? Act like the super-person you are and vanquish it. You know that light that’s always bugging you? You fix it. Suddenly, you start thinking, certain things need to be in certain places…
And soon, as you gain more power over the negative space, you’re creating a positive space.
3. Cleaning Lifts Your Mood Because It Gives A Sense of Accomplishment
Sometimes you sit there and think to yourself that nobody can see what you did. But the truth is, you saw it, and do you feel prod of yourself or what? You know that laundry that piled up? Yes, you’re the one who fixed it and folded it and you realize you did a lot.
You straightened a cabinet out. Hooray! That’s a huge accomplishment! The sense that you know what you did gives you encouragement to move forward with this idea of cleaning.
4. Cleaning Lifts Your Mood Because You Can See Instant Results
If you are a person like me, you want instant results. Like, you want those dang things taken care of today. Well, while you are cleaning, you are seeing instant results. Seriously, you’re watching it happen in real time, and you’re the one doing it.You straightened the paper work up, hooray! And suddenly, you can find everything again.
The results are in, and you, my friend, have won!
5. Cleaning Lifts Your Mood Because You Can Use Essential Oils
I’ve said it once. I’ve said it a million times. You can use Essential Oils to boost your mood. The bonus point is that sometimes you can use all purpose cleaners to help you boost that mood as you clean!
Recently, I was cleaning, and I used a DIY cleaner (water, vinegar, dish soap, and three drops of one of the Rocky Mountain Cleaning Oils) and I went from Oscar the Grouch to being in a great mood.
One of the things I genuinely love about Essential Oils is that it’s a fragrance that isn’t heavy or fake smelling, like you would get with Lysol or Pinesol. Don’t get me wrong, they are good brands, but I like lighter fragrances.
And, if you’re a diffuser like I am, and you like Orange Creamscicles you will love the Citrus Passion.
There is something about these specific oils that just make me happy. I know it’s a citrus thing, but it’s almost something more than that. Maybe it’s because it makes me think of sunshine or the beach.

6. Cleaning Lifts Your Mood Because It Makes You Feel Better
I don’t know what it is about a clean house, but I do know when something “feels” clean, it’s hard to describe how fantastic that feels. If you’ve ever been in a dusty and old house, you know it just feels dirty.
When you clean, and get the cobwebs out, the dust away, and the atmosphere of the room and area suddenly feels fresher, and more welcoming.
It’s a total vibe thing, I get it, but think of the last time you went to the school library, or a place where it’s just old – and it has that signature smell, and you just feel like it hasn’t been taken as good care of as it should be. You know the feeling.
Surely, I’m not the only one who feels this? Or, a better example: When your outside, and everything is covered in pollen, and the next day a storm comes through – and everything just feels – cleaner.
Maybe it’s my own warped psychosis. LOL
7. Cleaning Lifts Your Mood Because It Really Isn’t That Hard
You pick up a stick, with bristles on the end and move it side to side. You take a towel, spray a counter, and swipe it in an S motion. Really, it can’t get any simpler than that. It’s an easy thing to do, it’s just doing it.
It’s free exercise that you can do that is really really easy. It’s not like anyone is asking you to bring in the bulldozers – erm, ok, maybe if you have a teenager – but they can do their own cleaning.
Cleaning is so easy – just don’t over think it. I promise!
8. Cleaning Lifts Your Mood Because You Can Easily Find Things
There is nothing in this world that can put me in a bad mood faster than traffic, and not being able to find things. Spending 30 minutes trying to find my keys, or a pen, or the matching sock to my favorite sock, is so annoying.
But isn’t it nice to be able to find things easily? You know exactly where things are, and you’re not wasting money buying the 150th lightbulb, when in fact, you have one in your upper right hand drawer next to your door.
It not only becomes super efficient but it also helps make things so much easier.
9. Cleaning Lifts Your Mood Because You Can Breathe Easier
If you have ever lived in an area where there is pollen, or full of dust then you know it’s a little difficult. You simply cannot be in a good mood when you are hacking, or gasping for breath, or sneezing. It simply can’t be done.
You can’t live a positive life like that1 But, while your cleaning, you might get the occasional dust in your face, but the good news is that as long as you stay on top of it, you don’t have to worry about the dust attacking you and it’s so much easier to breathe.
Nothing feels better than taking a deep breath of fresh clean air. And when your home feel clean and it helps you breath cleaner, life is so much better.

10. Cleaning Lifts Your Mood Because You Can Play
Wait, play? Really? Yes! Because when you have a clean area around you, you have ultimately saved time, and you have tons of free time.
And, confession, when I’m cleaning, I can totally act like the playful dorky self that I am, without fear that people are actually judging me. Yes, I’m the one singing into the broomstick like the rockstar I’ve always dreamed to be.
It is even fun to put microfiber cloths on your feet and dance around. Yes, I’m the one that does that – but let me tell you – I probably have a heck of a lot more fun cleaning than anyone else!
And, when you can play and goof off, it always uplifts your mood.
Cleaning can be a lot of fun and can help lift your mood! It’s a wonderful thing, and can really make you so happy.
Seriously, next time you’re in a bad mood, start cleaning. You will be productive in getting your bad mood out and you’ll actually wind up pretty darn happy.
Now, it’s your turn!
What about cleaning do you enjoy?
