I am super excited about Karen Katcher. She wrote this book called The Secrets of Lake Road. I absolutely loved this book. I literally read it in three days. That may seem like a long time to some people, but I am a slow reader. Normally, I don’t give plots, because I personally feel that you can go to Amazon or Goodreads and read other reviewers synopsis. I think I may need to change that policy, simply because this book is that good.
This is a coming of age story. It’s about this girl, Caroline, and her relationship with her mother. Sound boring? Well, it’s not. The story starts out with a little girl, Sara, who drowns. The community conducts a search for the girls body, but instead of finding Sara’s body, they find the bones of a boy that died sixteen years ago. There is one problem. The bones belonged to a guy Caroline’s mom used to date.
The mystery begins. How did the boy die and did Caroline’s mom have anything to do with it? Caroline is on the hunt to discover who this guy was and what influence he had on her mother. Caroline’s mother, grandmother and grandfather do everything they can to not talk about the dead boy in front of Caroline.
The entire time, it’s a mystery to Caroline, and it’s a town mystery of how this boy drowned. Was it accidental or did Caroline’s mom do it?
I know the answer, but if I were to tell it, you would never read the book.
Quite frankly, I’m very impressed with this book. I didn’t figure out the answer to the mystery until about two-thirds of the way in the book. Guys. Let me tell you. This is a MASSIVE and AWESOME feat. Why? Because, in most books, I’ve figured out whodunnit by page thirty. Katcher has really raised the bar.
Her descriptions are phenomenal. I now want to visit the Pocono’s… but I might have to avoid that lake.
All in all, this book is worth it. Katcher is someone to watch in the literary world.
