I am not gonna lie. Transferring from High School to College can be so overwhelming. This is why I decided to create College Life 101.
Congrats. You are transitioning from a teenager to a fully functioning adult. You are no longer your parent’s responsibility. Freedom is yours. You can do what you want, when you want, how you want.
The problem? This comes with consequences.
Many people will try to tell you that school is either fun or awful. The thing about College is that it is the time for you to learn. You are learning a lot all at once. This is the time you are learning about time management, finances, how to communicate with your peers, your professors, and dealing with tons of emotions.
You will feel stressed, you will be overwhelmed, and you will be nervous.
Guess what? It’s totally cool to feel that way.
The reason is because thousands upon thousands have had to wake up to this stark reality and had to adapt.
Now, this section is designed to help you become more comfortable in this cold hard fact. And, it is here to help you adjust to this new life of yours.
There are some truths you need to be aware of though:
Nobody owes you anything.
This is one of the hardest things for people to accept. You work for your goal. You cannot slack off in college. There is little tolerance for it.
You will fail.
And that is perfectly ok. You will be fine. You will not die just because you fail. You will use it as a learning experience to know what you like, don’t like, what works, what doesn’t work. Failure is a wonderful teacher. Do not be afraid of it.
College is an opportunity to discover who you are.
This is the time to try all the things, travel all the places, and most of all get to know you. You are unsure of yourself, you will feel awkward, but it is fine. The rest of your peers feel the same way!
The ability to discover how much you enjoy things, may not really like things, and make new revelations about yourself can be so exciting. This is a time to challenge – well everything about who you are. That is okay as well. The more you are challenged, the more you will grow.
College is like Adulting, but you have help to adult.
College 101 will help you deal with the basics. This is a scary time, but it is so exciting, and you will get through it. When all else fails, take a deep breath and tell yourself – everything will be alright.
